“There were two ‘Reigns of Terror,’ if we would but remember and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the guillotine, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.”

— Mark Twain

“When capital and the ruling classes apologise for: Colonialism, the 14 hour day, class privilege, the 7 day working week, children in coalmines, the opium wars, the massacre of the Paris Commune, slavery, the Spanish-American War, the Boer War, starvation, apartheid, anti-union laws, the First World War, Flanders, trench warfare, mustard gas, aerial bombing, the Soviet Intervention, the Armenian Genocide, chemical weapons, fascism, the Great Depression, hunger marches, Nazism, the Spanish Civil War, militarism, Asbestosis, radiation death, the Massacre of Nanking, the Second World War, Belsen, Dresden, Hiroshima, Racism, the Mafia, nuclear weapons, the Korean War, DDT, McCarthyism, production lines, blacklists, Thalidomide, the rape of the Third World, poverty, the arms race, plastic surgery, the electric chair, environmental degradation, the Vietnam War, the military suppression of Greece, India, Malaya, Indonesia, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama and Turkey, the Gulf War, trade in human body parts, malnutrition, Exxon Valdez, deforestation, organized crime, the Heroin and Cocaine trade, tuberculosis, the destruction of the Ozone Layer, cancer, exploitation of labour and the deaths of 50,000,000 Communists and trade unionists in this century alone, then — and only then — will I consider apologising for the errors of socialism.”

  3. Over the decades I have frequently thought that a book on the major crimes of capitalism should be written. You just wrote the outline. Nice!!
P.S. Perhaps instead of just “apologize” it should add, “AND Pay Reparations”. Apologies are a f___ of a lot cheaper and don’t do much for the victims and their survivors.

  4. Respectfully, exaggerations make your list less powerful. Capitalists are to apologize for starvation (what about North Korea?), and Nazism?? Nazi meant “National Socialist”.
Radiation death is a product of capitalism?
The Second World War was caused in part by the aggressiveness of National socialist Nazis.
Poverty is unique to capitalism? Socialst policies have been shown to cause poverty at high rates.
“The arms race, plastic surgery, the electric chair” don’t need apologies, in my humble opinion.
    Environmental degradation?
Have you seen how Communist China treats it’s environment?
There is too much to cover here.
No way of life is perfect, but clearly when governments have too much power they misbehave, democratic and socialist. Under which form of rule can they more easily put a bayonet in your eye?

The National Socialist party was a far right fascist party, characterized by the heightened state defence and protection of capital in the form of increasingly close ties between corporations and the state, and the state advancing corporate interests with war commissions and imperialist designs.

Capital and Capitalism were alive and strong in Nazi Germany, and were encouraged, enabled and mobilized against the proletariat by the state in a way they were not in any other country to date. To argue that national socialists were actually socialists is a falsehood and overwhelming evidence of an attempt to discredit the Soviet Union and disarm it\’s revolutionary potential by comparing it and unifying it with Nazism.
